Full Description

The Mkuze Falls Game Reserve situated in Northern Zululand close to the southern border of Swaziland . Accommodation is offered in two Lodges, namely, the Mkuze Falls Lodge and the Mkuze Tented Lodge.The Lodge overlooks the waterfalls of the majestic Mkuze river and is situated in the midde of the 10.000 ha. “Big Five” private Game Reserve. The Lodge offers exclusive accommodation experiences, with nine air-conditioned bedrooms including private splash pools.The Mkuze Tented Lodge is located in a bend of the Mkuze River, with its 5 East African style Tents providing a stunning view over a large section of the river with its banks and the habitats beyond.The experienced rangers and trackers will give you a wonderful impression of the variety of animals, including the “Big Five” and unbelievable birdlife in your daily safari activities at either lodge.

The  reserve is dominated by the Shembe and Mahlangosi mountains and is host to a tremendous diversity of flora and fauna including: lion, leopard, elephant, white rhino, buffalo, cheetah, hippo, crocodile, and an impressive quantity and variety of plains game. Over 400 species of birds provides hours of interest for the keen birder.

The Mkuze Falls Lodge is located along the northern bank of the Mkuze River. Overlooking the Mkuze Waterfall, featuring eight luxuriously appointed Thatched Chalets and one Safari Suite, accommodating a total of  eighteen guests in utmost comfort and style. Further features include telephones, secure safe, overhead fan, air conditioning, mosquito nets and mini-bar. Guest amenities and robes are also an added luxury provided in the rooms.
Private plunge-pools and an outside shower provide a wild but intimate touch alongside the luxury of the air-conditioned bedroom. The waterfall, unique ecosystems and virgin wilderness compliment the personal service and comfort enjoyed in this remote but easily accessible hide.

The Mkuze Falls Tented Lodge is for the more adventurous at heart for a unique experience in “Hemingway” style East African Tents, each overlooking the Mkuze River. The elegance of the tented design is reminiscent of a bygone era, beckoned by the free standing Victorian bath in the en suite bathroom. The luxury tents also offer fans, air-conditioning, mosquito net, secure safe and mini bar facilities. Luxury guests amenities and gown are provided to complete a luxury stay.

Sprawling wooden walkways link the accommodation to a superbly decorated lounge with views across the falls, a bar, dining area, large viewing deck, swimming pool and Spa. Spacious public areas offer various dining options from the outdoor decks, cosy restaurant and the traditional African Boma.Guests who wish to dine in privacy can do so with a little notice, this can be arranged and set up where you so wish - such as on  your private verandah or in the middle of the bush. Dining options at the Tented lodge include open air dining around the pool, the cosy dining room or the traditional, open air, rustic African Boma. Private dining is also available at a variety of venues including tent decks or in the bush.  High tea is an occasion with delectable pastries and cakes served in the welcoming lounge. A well stocked curio shop offering African artefacts, basket ware, jewellery, paintings, pottery and clothing is open daily.

The Spa at Mkuze Falls Lodge is run by a fully qualified massage therapists and beautician and offers the various massage treatments, manicures and pedicures to compliment your safari stay!To add to the full relaxation at both lodges, Mkuze Falls offers the facility of a massage therapist. On request this can be enjoyed anytime of the day in the privacy of your own room or in our Spa centre.

Activities:

  • Game Drives: The unique ecosystems of riverine, wetland, lowveld, bushveld and montane grassland provide the diversity for the large quantity of bird over 400 species) and animal species. The reserve is home to the big five as well as an impressive variety of wildlife including, amongst others, cheetah, hippo, giraffe, zebra and large herds of antelope. We offer two game drives per day which are planned to coincide with the best game viewing times of the day and range from 2 to 3 hours. All animals roam freely and strict conservation policies are in place.
    (We recommend that guests arrive at the reserve by 15h00 if they wish to participate in the afternoon game drive)
  • Walks: Walking is a wonderful way to appreciate the smaller animals and insects of the African bush. These walks can be arranged with the rangers at Mkuze Falls.
  • Other leisure activities: Board games and books are made available to the guests.
  • Health Spa Facilities are available by appointment.
  • Both Lodges have swimming pools. 

Children over the age of 12 are welcomed at Mkuze Falls Lodge and children of all ages are welcomed at the Mkuze Falls Tented Lodge. 

Malaria - Mkuze Falls is considered to be in a low risk malaria area. It is recommended that you visit your doctor/pharmacist for advice on the use of prophylactics. It is also advised to make use of insect repellent and to wear long sleeved clothing and trousers, especially during the early morning and evening hours. Mosquito repellent is made available in all rooms.

What to take - Walking shoes, Sunhats, sunglasses and sun block, Camera and binoculars, Light clothing and swimming costumes, Warm clothing for game drives.

Rooms must be vacated by 11H00 for the convenience of arriving guests. Arrival time from 12noon onwards for check in. Mkuze has a private air strip for charters. Closest airport for scheduled flights is Richards Bay
