Askari Game Lodge on Plumari Africa Private Game Reserve and the first in Gauteng to have the BIG 5 offering an authentic nature, wildlife and historical experience and is less than one hour away from Johannesburg or Pretoria.

The interior of this lodge manages to capture the romance and essence of ‘Africa meets Antique Dutch’ with décor pieces dating back to the 1800’s. Slipper baths, wash stands, luggage chests, antique Oregon cupboards and tables are subtly placed within the luxury four-star surrounding, to emphasize the captivating history of the Magaliesburg area. All chalets have thatch roofs and wooden patios and  include king size (or twin) beds, mini-bars, complimentary tea/ coffee, safes, hairdryers, radio alarm clocks, cooling fans, en-suite with Victorian bath and shower. 


Take a game drive in the late afternoon and you could encounter elephant, giraffe, rhino, buffalo and leopard whilst enjoying the stillness of an escape from the city. End off a perfect afternoon with a sundowner or two and add to the relaxed atmosphere of a bush game drive. Experience and interact with elephants like never before - close contact with these majestic animals will leave you exhilarated and educated on the plight of these intelligent creatures.

The Sterkfontein caves, Maropeng and Hartebeespoort dam are in close proximity to Askari Game Lodge and should be visited when visiting this historical region. Hiking trails, horseback riding and a game of golf can all be experienced nearby. 

The Day Visitors Centre , adds a whole new dimension of leisure, conferencing and functions to the existing offerings at Askari Game Lodge. In contrast to the local history depicted by the main farm house decor, the Day Visitors Center is abundant with African symbology, rich earthy colours and unique African décor focal points. The two contrasting décor themes pay homage to the Afrikaner history while highlighting the significant influence of the indigenous African tribes of the area.

ACTIVITIES:

Big 5 Game Drives  -  The Plumari Africa Game Reserve - in which Askari  Game Lodge is situated, comprises a pristine malaria free wilderness area of over 3000 hectares. The Reserve boasts an amazing natural African bushveld with an abundance of flora, fauna, birdlife and wildlife. A game drive is approximately 3 hours in duration. Late afternoon drives will involve a sundowner with a fantastic view towards the end of the drive. Late afternoon drives will generally include a cool drink (please pre-order on the game drive booking form prior to the drive) and a morning drive will include tea/coffee and some snacks.

Elephant Encounters - The Askari Africa Elephant Experience. Damara and Nzewe are both sub-adult males aged around 11 and 13 years respectively, born and living as wild elephants on a private game reserve in Limpopo Province which at the time was about 50% overpopulated with elephants. Rather than being culled, Damara and Nzewe were acquired by Elephants for Africa Forever "EFAF" and added to their licenced training program. EFAF work closely with Nature Conservation, NSPCA and other relevant groups - their training is covered by permits and involves strict protocols covering all areas from safety to the well being of the elephants. Askari are also very conscious of the dignity of these mighty animals, and accordingly have tried to build "interaction" activities around their normal daily routines of roaming and feeding in wild bushveld, rather than forcing the elephants into routines to fit around humans.

History Museum - Situated within the Gala Hall the our museum.Askari Game Lodge boasts one of the largest private collections of ox wagons, carts and other animal drawn vehicles from the period 1800 to 1900. Tools and other collectibles from that era are also on view in our museum. The Main Lodge building was built in the mid 1800`s. Every effort has been made to restore this wonderful building to the splendour it was some 150 years ago. No structural changes are permitted. The museum also tells the history of the area, and in particular, the Battle of Nooitgedacht where the British were defeated on 13th December 1900 by the Boers led by Generals de la Rey, Smuts and Beyers.History talks are available on request. Going much further back in history, San Bushmen carvings and stone age tools also abound in the area. Examples of these are available in the museum, and our bush walks take you through areas where many stone carvings can be found. 

Bush Walks - The accompanied bush walks offer guests an ideal opportunity to learn more about the fauna and flora of the region, as well as discover some of the smaller inhabitants of our reserve. Allow our guides to point out the finer details of the reserve. Which plants may be used for medicinal purposes and which are preferred by the animals in the reserve. Discover rock carvings along the way, in an area alongside what is said to be the oldest mountain range on earth, the Magaliesberg. The variety of insects and birds is astounding - don`t forget your camera! Our bush walks cater for all ages (children over 12 years are welcome), and fitness levels.

Stargazing - The African night sky provides a perfect backdrop for star gazing which we offer at Askari Game Lodge upon request. Let a guided tour of the celestial canopy open up a new perspective on your universe and the special place that humans occupy in it. Or simply sit back, relax and be enchanted and entertained by a show that allows you participate, hands on, while the sounds of the African night transport you through time and bring you closer to what our ancestors experienced once the sun has set...

The Circular Lapa with roaring fireplace in the middle, is set on pure river sand under a giant thatch roof structure and accommodates up to 40 people .
